Boxing ace Vijender is World No 2.


BEIJING Olympics bronze medallist Vijender Kumar was on Thursday ranked No. 2 by the international boxing body ( AIBA AIBA Associazione Italiana Brokers Di Assicurazione (Italian Insurance Brokers' Association)
AIBA Association Internationale de Boxe Amateur (International Boxing Association) 
). This is the first time that the AIBA has come out with rankings.

Apart from Vijender, three other Indians also figure in the top 10. Vijender, the first Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal, is placed second only to the 2008 Olympic silver medallist Emilio Correa Bayeux of Cuba, with 2,000 points in five tournaments.

Other than Vijender, Thackchom Nanao Singh is ranked fifth in the 48 kg, Beijing quarter- finalist Akhil Kumar Akhil Kumar is an Indian Boxer. He won the gold medal in the Bantamweight 54 kg category at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.  is ninth in 57 kg while Dinesh Kumar is seventh in 81 kg.

A total of 20 Indians have been ranked in 11 categories. Vijender was elated on hearing the news, but the Bhiwani boxer said he never expected such a high ranking See Google bomb. .

" I never thought I would be ranked No. 2 in the world one day. But I am extremely happy after achieving this. It has taken my confidence to a new level," Vijender said.

He also said that timing of the new rankings was perfect as the World Championships are just 10 days away. " It has come at the right time. Now when I will be up against any boxer in the World Cup, the pressure will be on him as I am the World No. 2." The 23- year- old boxer believes that the ranking system will make boxers more responsible and they will push themselves to the limit. " Ranking shows where we stand in the world of boxing. I am sure, now boxers will try harder to improve their performance as it will help them achieve higher rankings," he said.

AIBA unveiled the official international men's world rankings for the first time in its history, with many Olympic medallists featuring in the 11 weight categories. Boxing powerhouse Cuba topped the tally with seven of the 11 top- ranked boxers.

" I am participating in major tournaments over the next 18 months. I will try my best to perform well in these events so that I can top the list," said Vijender.
