Boxing: No holds Barred in pals big fight.

TWO top North East amateur boxers will go head to head on Thursday in an effort to relaunch Relaunch can refer to several things:

Birtley's Gary Barr will clash with Tony Jefferies on his own Sunderland territory with England coach Terry Edwards Terry Edwards (b. August 10, 1960) is a musician from Hornchurch, England.

Edwards is travelling to the North East especially to check on Jefferies after a long lay-off cost him his place on the Great Britain Great Britain, officially United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, constitutional monarchy (2005 est. pop. 60,441,000), 94,226 sq mi (244,044 sq km), on the British Isles, off W Europe. If the Sunderland lad wins and impresses, he could be reinstated in time for the World Championships.

However, Barr himself has something to prove. He was dropped from the elite list of boxers who are centrally funded and, in effect, can concentrate only on boxing rather than have a day job.

"We are great pals but come Thursday it'll be a war between us," Barr told me.

"We have trained together a lot with England but that won't get in the way of doing the business.

"This will be the first time we have ever fought one another because until 18 months ago I was a middleweight and he was always light heavy.

"It was a blow to lose my elite standing after being defeated in the ABAs, but as it is performance based I cannot complain.

"I'm now labouring for a friend which also helps my fitness.

"All I'm doing is getting my head down in the gym and concentrating on the fight. I know he has home advantage. I'm fighting on his club bill but that doesn't matter once the bell goes."

Barr will be the underdog but he'll have plenty of support with no fewer than nine other Birtley boxers on the card.
