NOT many sporting events in Liverpool could boast selling to a near capacity crowd the night before a Merseyside derby The Merseyside Derby is the name of the football match played between the Everton and Liverpool football clubs, the two most successful clubs from the Merseyside area of England. , but when it comes to boxing the city proved a big hit once again this weekend.

Thanks to the rising prominence of hot prospects Paul Smith and Derry Mathews, there was barely an empty seat at Everton Park Sports on Friday.

Supported by a talented line-up of Carl Wall, Gary Thornhill and Stephen Mullin, the second professional outing of Mathews and Smith on home soil had city fight fans arriving in their droves.

`TheBoys are Back in Town'cried the fight programme as the Vaughan Promotions boxing bandwagon rolled into Liverpool once more. And where powerful displays by the undefeated trio of Mathews,Smith and Wall ensured they remained just that,Mullin and Thornhill also did not disappoint.

In fairness some of the opponents on offer were simply no match for the local lads -most notably those who faced Mathews and Thornhill.

Mathews'dilemma is a result of his quick progression in the pro- ranks. By forcing the second round submission of Belfast's Marty Kayes,Mathews displayed all the skills that suggest he is ready to move on to his first title shot as he took his record to 5-0.

Ahead of this contest, the classy superbantam weight had focused his sights on a shot at a Central Area belt, and as it becomes more difficult to pair him with non-title contenders of similar skill and ability, that prospect moves ever closer.

Likewise for Smith. At 11st 13lbs,Smith embarked on his contest against fellow middleweight Patrick Cito of Birmingham at his heaviest yet before extending his tally to 4-0.
