Sports writers don't like going over old ground. What's the point? In Matthew Macklin's case I am going to because he's worth it.

I'll never forget seeing him lying suddenly out cold, not moving, decked by a stunning combination just as I will never forget seeing Randolph Turpin destroyed by Yolande Pompey and reeling all over the ring, or Henry Cooper Henry Cooper may refer to:

, or Brian London Brian London (real name Brian Sidney Harper, born 19 June, 1934) was a British boxer. He lives in Blackpool, England. London's nicknames in the ring were "The British Bulldog" and "The Blackpool Rock".  battered by Muhammad Ali.

Macklin was knocked out in the tenth round of a savage British light middleweight title challenge against superbly fit champion Jamie Moore last weekend.

The question that lingered in this neck of the woods immediately after the fight was why Macklin's corner - headed by Billy Graham - let him go out for the tenth knowing that a fantastic ninth all-action non-stop round had brought both boxers almost to the state of collapse.

But Graham gave the perfect answer: "I knew the fight would end in the next round. Moore was exhausted and so was Macklin. One of them would not survive and I wasn't sure who it was going to be.

"I have every faith in Macklin and I felt that he could find that little extra. Plus the fact I could not deny him the opportunity of realising his dream of winning the title. It didn't work out.

"But what his performance did tell me was that he will be even bigger and better than I predicted.

"Having said that, he fought the wrong fight. Tactically he did everything we didn't want him to do. He was so hyped up. He wanted it so badly he played into Moore's hands.

"I was in charge in his corner so why didn't I stop him? I wanted to. But I couldn't. It was like trying to stop a runaway train.

"After such a blistering start I thought he would settle down after the second round. No chance.

"In between rounds I told him he had to slow down and pick his punches. He seemed to be listening but when he went back out he was like a man possessed.

"Now having watched the video a number of times I am so proud of him. He will never make the same mistakes again.

"He is an amazingly quick learner. Moore is now likely to vacate To annul, set aside, or render void; to surrender possession or occupancy.

The term vacate has two common usages in the law. With respect to real property, to vacate the premises means to give up possession of the property and leave the area totally devoid of contents.
the British title. He certainly doesn't want to fight Macklin in a return.

"We will then go for the vacant championship and that will put us back on course to make Matthew's dreams come true . . . and that dream is world status," he added.
