LIVERPOOL'S Stephen Burke marched into the quarter finals of the World Championships in Thailand last night -keeping alive English hopes of returning with a medal.

The Anfield lightweight star was simply too strong for Kimbundie of the Democratic Republic of Congo, winning by a convincing points margin.

The 23-year- old faces an uphill task in the last 16, though,as red-hot favourite Mario Kindelan of Cuba awaits.

Kindelan is a two-time World champion and also won the 60 kg gold at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

``I've got nothing to lose against him and I'llgo out on my sword,'' said Burke today. ``He's the man to beat so I'lljust go in there blazing.''

Burke is due back in the ring in Bangkok late this evening.

Meanwhile, Merseyside's other two defeated boxers -featherweight David Mulholland and middleweight Stephen Birch Stephen Birch (1872 - 1940) was born in New York, and attended Columbia University. Mulholland lost out on a tight points decision to Korean Zyang Yuan on Monday, hours before Birch's stoppage defeat to Czech Thomas Padank.
