Bowyer ready to run the gauntlet.

Byline: By Alan Oliver Not to be confused with Oliver Allen.

Alan Oliver is a journalist and chief sports writer for the Evening Chronicle, based in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and has arguably been the most prominent writer about Newcastle United since the 1980s.

Lee Bowyer Lee David Bowyer (born January 3 1977 in Newham, London) is an English professional footballer who currently plays for FA Premier League side West Ham United. He has been capped once by England.  admitted today that he expects to get some stick tomorrow as he goes to Anfield for the first time since turning down Liverpool, (writes Alan Oliver).

was philosophical about the welcome he is likely to get on Merseyside, saying: "What's new?"

The one-time capped England international looked set to join Liverpool from Leeds United for pounds 8m before the start of last season and everything looked to be done and dusted.

But Bowyer pulled the plug at the last minute - much to the annoyance of the Liverpool supporters - and he accepts they will not have forgotten.

(pictured) is under no illusions about the reception he will get from the home fans on a day when they will be surely mocking United for pipping them for that Champions League qualifying spot.

"Yes, I know I will get the treatment from the Liverpool fans," said Bowyer today

"But I get that wherever I go. I'm used to it by now."

The folly of playing Bowyer wide on the right for most of the season has been illustrated in the last two games against Wolves and Southampton when, back playing in his preferred central midfield role, not only did he score in both but his overall play was also outstanding.

"The last two results have been disappointing but at least I have enjoyed playing in the centre of midfield," he said

"The end of the season is coming too early for me."

Sven-Goran Eriksson was at the St Mary's Stadium on Wednesday and he will have been impressed with Bowyer's performance.

But it's probably too late for him to force his way into the England reckoning for the European Championship finals in Portugal.
