In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98). NEC was founded in Tokyo in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Ltd. Corporation, a provider of Internet, broadband network and enterprise business solutions, via its NEC France subsidiary. The order from Bouygues Telecom, a mobile services provider in France, is for a video streaming platform developed by NEC, which comprises a set of servers and integrated software based on PacketVideo Network Solutions technology. The platform provides access to Video-on-Demand on i-mode-enabled EDGE handsets and will enable customers of Bouygues Telecom to watch live TV. Alongside the provision of hardware and software, the order also includes system integration, optimisation of the video streaming platform with the existing i-mode service platform and related after-service and maintenance. Bouygues Telecom launched its 'i-mode Haut-Debit' broadband mobile Internet service on its EDGE network in October 2005 and video streaming will reportedly be one of the main services on the network for the year end. Video related services such as video streaming are expected to help differentiate high-speed data services, create new added value for users and help expand use of EDGE/3G.
