Alex Maskey Alex Maskey (born January 8 1952) is an Irish politician who was the first member of Sinn Féin to serve as Belfast's Lord Mayor.[] He is Sinn Féin's longest sitting Councillor and is currently an MLA for South Belfast as well as being a councillor for the Laganbank area  squared up to each other at the weekend as they relived their younger days in the ring.

The two, both amateur boxing champs in their teens, met regularly on the boxing circuit in the 60s.

Sinn Fein MLA Maskey said: "I never fought him but we boxed at the same time and the same boxing fraternity.

"He was a nice, decent fella, gentle but I wouldn't like to have been on the end of his left hook."

The Hollywood big hitter will be flying back to the US with a special memento - the former Belfast Lord Mayor presented him with a 1966 boxing programme featuring both their fights.

Mr Maskey said: "I enjoyed talking to him about the boxing circuit and individuals we both knew.

"There were no blows exchanged just talking about old times. He doesn't seem to have changed one iota."
