Bourke directs architectural firm to center stage.

and set the bar to a higher standard. Everyone worked around the clock to bring design to a high level," he said.

Yet Bourke has always been good at making sure the show goes on. His first assignment for IA was to see the firm through a major recession in Washington DC in 2002, a feat which lead him to comparable roles in London and finally in New York City New York City: see New York, city.

Bourke has always had strange luck during times of economic adversity. Though it was expected he might follow in the footsteps left in the wings of theatres across Ireland and take over his father's business, Strand Electric, the Irish recession of 1983, sent him packing to the States. He landed in the States, pedaling his songwriting uncle, Pete St. John's folk music folk music: see folk song.

"Coming here was a huge adventure. I had no real idea what I'd end up doing," he said.

Bourke saw the job as a "natural fit" which extended on both his degree in business administration from Trinity, and the work he did building stage sets during his school years. After meeting for lunch with a friend who was a designer for VOA (Variable Optical Attenuator) A device that can incrementally adjust the power of the optical signal passing through it.  associates, he signed on for a stint as director of business development.

Though, Bourke admits that coming at things from an architectural side first was a "bit of a leap," he has always had a great respect for the profession.

"I like what architects and designers stand for. I cant imagine an industry that is more creative or more dynamic and that has such an effect on people. Design is a labor of love, and to me, that has always been very attractive," he said.

Bourke's thriving entrepreneurial talents were perhaps expected. His talent for managing and growing an architectural business that, over the past seven or eight years, "really defined my career and allowed me to have a real influence within the industry" was more unexpected.

That talent was first realized when he joined IA and managed to help pull the Washington DC branch of the firm out of a major slump during a dismal economic recession.

That style of developing relationships helped them flourish when Bourke was transferred to London and jumped on board the firm's IA Interior Architects Global Alliance, a consortium of architectural and design firms with over 60 offices and 1000 staff in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The firm has blossomed all over the world, vetting local architectural firms to guide them in cultural standards through their work. "We are not just being asked to design buildings anymore, we are also asked to act as an extension of the client, to provide translation and articulate what our client is about," he said.

In the future, he hopes to have input on the firm's expansion in India, and continue to promote the firm's mission, which over the years has become more integral to his belief system.

"We have a unique talent pool here that has the ability to tap into and change the way people feel about their environment. If we continue to stay on the path that we are on, I don't see any reason to leave," he said.
