Bound for Beijing! This summer, diver Christy Cutshaw is making a trip into her past and--hopefully--into her future. She'll visit her past by going to the sChinese orphanage ORPHANAGE, Eng. law. By the custom of London, when a freeman of that city dies, his estate is divided into three parts, as follows: one third part to the widow; another, to the children advanced by him in his lifetime, which is called the orphanage; and the other third part may be by him that was her home before being adopted at about age one by an American family American Family is a photographic artwork exhibition by Renée Cox. Christy, nine, puts in hours and hours of practice every week with her coach, former Olympic diver Cynthia Potter. "Cynthia is a serious coach and she has a sense of humor Noun 1. sense of humor - the trait of appreciating (and being able to express) the humorous; "she didn't appreciate my humor"; "you can't survive in the army without a sense of humor" sense of humour, humor, humour , too," says Christy. "She makes me do pike I do the wrong dive or balk balk the action of a horse when it refuses to obey a command to which it usually responds. See also jibbing. , but that is fair. She always claps clap 1 v. clapped, clap·ping, claps v.intr. 1. To strike the palms of the hands together with a sudden explosive sound, as in applauding. 2. when I do a good dive." Staying tuned in to the dive is very important. A diver has to commit to a dive with their body. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Her hardest dive so far is called a "one-half pike" off of the three-meter board (about eight feet off the water). "If I open too soon," she says, "I smack my stomach!" For her trip to China, Christy is looking forward to visiting the orphanage where she lived before her adoption. She wants to meet her foster mom, the lady who took care of her. Christy also says. her birth mother "was brave and gave me away because she didn't have enough food or money to take care of me." Says Christy's room, "It is against the law in China to give up a child for adoption, so Christy was left at the steps of a government building at night with a note, some milk, and a little money." Christy has many practices and competitions to go before she can try for her ultimate goal, earning a place on the Olympic Diving Team. But that's OK with her; she enjoys the process. "My favorite part of competitive diving is not winning medals," she said, "but doing the dives and having fun." [ILLUSTRATIONS OMITTED] |
