Boucher, Leger star as Spartans advance.

Byline: Jay Gearan

ASHBURNHAM - The third-seeded Oakmont Regional girls' basketball team had won both regular-season games against sixth-seeded Clinton. But they were close, competitive contests.

So few would have expected the Spartans' dominating, 60-33 home-court victory last night in the Central Mass. Division 2 quarterfinals. From the opening tipoff, it was Oakmont's night to shine.

The 18-3 Spartans advance to the semifinals at 3:15 p.m. Sunday at Fitchburg State College against the winner of today's Groton-Dunstable and Uxbridge game. The Gaels finished 13-8.

For Oakmont, Sunday's trip to the semifinal game is the first since 1999.

"I never expected this," said Oakmont coach Jeff O'Neill Jeffrey O'Neill (Born - February 23 1976 in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada) is a Canadian professional hockey Right Winger in the National Hockey League who has played for the Hartford Whalers, Carolina Hurricanes, and most recently the Toronto Maple Leafs. , wearing a Spartan green necktie. "The girls came out of the chute and were very focused. They just showed a lot of heart, a lot of emotion."

The Spartans were paced by the hot shooting of junior Emily Boucher, who scored 16 points including four 3-pointers. Senior captain Sally Leger added 14 points and junior Marisa Dunn 10.

O'Neill said the accurate shooting of Boucher was the key to opening up the Spartans' offense.

The Gaels, plagued by turnovers, were led by senior Ashley Trautner's 10 points. Trautner made three of her team's nine field goals.

Clinton's only lead came at the start when Rachel Dylewicz sank two foul shots. Oakmont forged in front with a steal and layup from senior captain Colleen col·leen

At the 3:25 mark, Clinton's Trautner made a nice spin move and hook shot, pulling the Gaels to within a basket at 6-4, but then the Spartans made their move.

It was more of the same in the second quarter as the Spartans built a 35-14 lead by halftime. Trapping the Gaels at half court numerous times, Oakmont made basket after basket in transition, holding Clinton to three field goals in the first half.

Oakmont began the third quarter with a 10-2 run, boosting its lead to 45-16 and settling the game early. Dunn scored six of her 10 points in that span.
