Bottle-ing success! School's football sides prove to be a real class act.


WHEN it comes to getting a kick out of success, Walbottle Campus School can teach its rivals a footballing lesson or two.

A top-of-the-class campaign has seen the Newcastle school claim silverware in competitions at various age groups.

Leading the way was Walbottle's year seven team, who won all four 11-a-side competitions it entered and who also reached the semi-finals of a national fivea-side competition.

They also won the Northumberland County Northumberland County is the name of several counties in Northern America:

  • Northumberland County, Virginia
 Cup, the City Cup, the County League and the TSSA Cup and were city and county five-a-side champions.

The squad was Wayne Dunn, Reece Richardson, Jordan Garrett, Jordan Gabriel, Jordan Marshall, Adam Armstrong, Ryan Forster, Alex Opie, Liam McKewon, Callum Bell, Peter McRoberts, Scott Hulse, Matty Allen, Declan Higgins, Nicky Bateson and John Archibold.

Walbottle's year nine boys' team took the TSSA Cup after beating Biddick Sports College Sports Colleges were introduced as part of the Specialist Schools Programme in the United Kingdom. The system enables secondary schools to specialise in certain fields, in this case, PE, sports and dance.  4-3.

The triumphant squad consisted of Adam Lee, Dean Stewart, Aaron Henderson, Dominic Kay, Ross McKeown, Sammy Craig, Lee Gilchrist, Liam Warren, Michael Wilkinson, Sam Pearth, Carl Chapman, John Chapman, John, 1774–1845, American pioneer, more familiarly known as Johnny Appleseed, b. Massachusetts. The boys' year eight, year nine and year 11 sides were respective City League victors.

At year 10 level, Walbottle were winners of the National Cup, the City Cup and the City League - the second time in three years the squad has clinched the National Cup.

 School took place at Bramall Lane, home of Sheffield United, and Walbottle won it 1-0 thanks to a secondhalf strike from Liam McNamara.

Almost 900 teams entered the competition, and Walbottle had to win through local and regional rounds before facing schools from Manchester and Leicester in the quarter and semi-finals..

The team, which has only lost three games in the last four years, comprised Lee Wall, Connor Higgins, Lewis Exley, Nathan Johnstone, Lance McGlen, Dean Thompson, Sam Norris, Michael Barrett, David Luke, Ben Sayer, Dennis Knight, Liam McNamara, Lewis Howlett, Ben Gabrial, Connor Patton and Jordan Chawner.

Walbottle's girls,meanwhile, were also proving belles of the ball. They were Under-15 City Cup winners, Under-14 County League champions and victors of the TyneMet College women's tournament.

The all-conquering squad was: Jemma Myhill, Emma Ruddick, Lauren Payne, Megan Pyper, Alice Teasdale, Hannah Fenn, Coley coley

Head teacher Mike Booth said: "The level of success our teams have had this year is unprecedented. I doubt whether we could ever have another campaign as successful.

"I am delighted, and our achievements are a credit to the hard work all the PE staff have put in this season."
