Boston company makes 15 million medical documents available on the Internet.

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 20, 1996-- How does a drug work? How should a disease be treated? Who is researching breast cancer? The answers to these questions, and many more, can be found at a newly launched Internet site.

Designed primarily for doctors, Physicians' Home Page (PHP (PHP Hypertext Preprocessor) A scripting language used to create dynamic Web pages. With syntax from C, Java and Perl, PHP code is embedded within HTML pages for server side execution. ) combines a number of leading medical databases onto one site on the World Wide Web. Anyone with access to the Internet can query the databases and browse through the published materials to quickly find the answers to their most pressing medical questions.

The new Internet See Web 2.0 and Internet2.  service incorporates access to abstracts from more 3,750 medical journals totaling approximately 15 million individual documents. The service is backed by an Editorial Board from Harvard University Harvard University, mainly at Cambridge, Mass., including Harvard College, the oldest American college. Harvard College

and other medical institutions. The Editorial Board is also working on creating new documents which will answer the day to day questions faced by doctors and patients.

Dr. Michael Rees, Harvard Medical School Harvard Medical School (HMS) is one of the graduate schools of Harvard University. It is a prestigious American medical school located in the Longwood Medical Area of the Mission Hill neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. , and Dr. Mark E. Deutchman, University of Colorado University of Colorado may refer to:

  • University of Colorado system
School of Medicine, are co-Editors for the new service. Says Dr. Rees, "Thanks to the Internet and the World Wide Web, physicians located anywhere in the world can benefit from the expert knowledge and opinions of top specialists and subspecialists."

Among the new publications offered at the site is MD Digests, a unique service which summarizes current articles from major medical journals, provides links to related sites on the World Wide Web, offers suggested terms for searching medical databases, and provides all of the references published with the article.

During the next few months most of this medical information can be accessed for free by doctors and the general public, but in future the company plans to charge a low monthly membership fee.

Michael Grover, Product Manager for Physicians' Home Page, says "Our current plan is to charge physicians somewhere between $10 and $20 per month for access to the full service. That works out to a fraction of a cent per document!"

Tony Alves, Publisher, supervises the content that is included in the service. He says, "PHP is an excellent platform for publishing new types of materials in partnership with other companies." As an example of this, he cites the interest PHP has aroused throughout the industry. "At least once a day," he says, "I speak with others in the industry who are interested in publishing their content through PHP."

The databases, which include the US National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE The online medical database of the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) whose parent is the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD. MEDLINE contains millions of articles from thousands of medical journals and publications. The consumer section of the site (http://medlineplus. , AIDSLINE AIDSLINE AIDS Information OnLINE , and CancerLIT, are completely searchable. What's more, many links are provided from the search results directly to the home pages of medical journals. If users would like the full article of almost any of the more than 15 million documents faxed to them, a button within the search results provides an order form.
