Boston Red Sox Pitcher Ramon Martinez Joins Team After Recovering From Severe Shoulder Injury; SportsTrac Systems Inc.'s Rehabilitation Technology Aids Recovery.

BOULDER, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 2, 1999--

Fourteen months after a career-threatening injury to the rotator cuff of his pitching arm, Boston Red Sox The Boston Red Sox are a professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. The Red Sox are a member and currently champions of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball’s American League. From to the present, the Red Sox have played in Fenway Park.  pitcher Ramon Martinez has resumed major league pitching today due in part to his use of the SportsRAC(TM) system.

The SportsRAC system is a PC-based shoulder training and injury rehabilitation system developed by SportsTrac Systems Inc., a developer of athletic performance software.

The SportsRAC system works with a free-standing, anatomically supportive structure coupled with computer technology that lets an athlete safely exercise a joint that has been surgically repaired. Normally exercise is delayed for a period of time after surgery because of the possibility of further injury. This delay causes some deterioration of motor skills.

SportsRAC enables controlled exercise to begin earlier to speed the rehabilitation process, thereby shortening recovery times.

According to Frank Jobe, M.D., medical director of the Los Angeles Dodgers "Dodgers" and "Brooklyn Dodgers" redirect here. For the American football team, see Brooklyn Dodgers (football). For the Eastern Basketball Association team, see Brooklyn Dodgers (basketball). , and Pat Screnar, the Dodgers' physical therapist, players rarely recover from open repair surgeries with the ability to perform at pre-injury levels.

After consulting with Michael Mellman, M.D., Dodger team physician and chairman of SportsTrac Systems, the decision was made to utilize the SportsRAC system in Martinez's rehabilitation. Martinez's recovery exceeded all expectations. The post-op progress was uniquely smooth and without untoward event.

The successful recovery was due to the combined efforts of the player, surgeon and therapist, as well as the inclusion of the SportsRAC system into Martinez's recovery program.

The Boston Red Sox signed the former Dodger to a multiyear contract in March 1999.

"I've treated a number of different people with rotator cuff and reconstructive shoulder surgeries," said Screnar. "Ramon followed the same program guidelines I'd have given to anybody else. The only different variable was SportsRAC. I assume this contributed to his rapid recovery."

The Red Sox activated Martinez from the 60-day disabled today, and the pitcher made his first major league start this afternoon against the Kansas City Royals The Kansas City Royals are a professional baseball team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The Royals are a member of the Central Division of Major League Baseball's American League. From to the present, the Royals have played in Kauffman Stadium. .

"We're very pleased with Ramon Martinez's rapid recovery and are looking forward to sharing SportsRAC with other rehabilitating athletes so that they can get back to their normal performance levels," said Marc Silverman, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "We also believe that SportsRAC can be used not only for rehab but as a training device as well. SportsRAC is currently being used by both healthy and recovering major league players."
