Chronic, progressive autoimmune disease causing connective-tissue inflammation, mostly in synovial joints. It can occur at any age, is more common in women, and has an unpredictable course.

The draft protocol is for a double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-center study similar to a successful Phase III study previously performed by Greenwich Pharmaceuticals, the original developer of the drug.

BLSI obtained THERAFECTIN as a consequence of its merger with Greenwich Pharmaceuticals Inc. in June 1995. "We have designed this study to be similar to Greenwich's successful RA-9 study, with the goal of replicating the positive results that were achieved for THERAFECTIN in that Study. We feel that if statistically significant positive results are obtained from this study, we will have confirmation of the efficacy of THERAFECTIN for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis," stated Marc E. Lanser M.D., chief scientific officer of BLSI.

BLSI's products include among others, Cartilage-derived Inhibitor (CDI CDI compact disc interactive: a system for storing a mix of software, data, audio, and compressed video for interactive use under processor control ), a natural anti-angiogensis factor for the treatment of solid tumors; Axogenesis Factor 1 (AF-1), a novel central nervous system growth factor; Altropane(TM), a radioimaging agent for the diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease; and a transcription factor that controls the expression of molecules associated with autoimmune disease.
