Boston Edison Announces 1995 First Quarter Earnings.

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 27, 1995--Boston Edison Edison, township (1990 pop. 88,680), Middlesex co., NE N.J., inc. 1870 as Raritan Township, renamed 1954. Edison's varied manufactures include light trucks, chemicals, metal products, electrical and electronic equipment, machinery, and instruments.  Company (BSE-NYSE) reported earnings per common share of $0.36 and $2.41 for the three and twelve months ended March 31, 1995, respectively, versus earnings of $0.35 and $2.37 for the same periods in 1994.

The increase in 1995 first quarter earnings primarily reflects an annual rate increase of $29 million which became effective November November: see month.  1, 1994, and lower amortization expenses. These were partially offset by a 4.0% decrease in retail electricity sales, primarily caused by milder weather.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Tom May said, "Despite a mild winter, which reduced sales, careful attention to managing costs and additional revenues in the final year of a three year rate settlement allowed the company to continue its financial progress."
