The outcome of business operations is the harvesting of value from assets  from warehouse to cash register by installing a Storage Area Network with IBM's Shark Enterprise Storage Server as the centerpiece. The company now also plans to launch an online wedding gift registry for the June wedding season.

According to Joe Poole, Boscov's technical support manager, an expanding customer base -- both in-store and online -- and a need to improve supply chain logistics were the key drivers for improving the manageability, access and backup of its data.

"Shark's speed, reliability and performance deliver a reliable solution to managing and backing up our critical data," said Poole of Boscov's, who choose IBM's Shark over EMC's storage server. "It has allowed Boscov's to plan a wedding gift registry for the June demand while also eliminating bottlenecks in our supply chain operations from warehouse to storefront. The result is better delivery of services and goods to our customers."

The Storage Area Network (SAN) integrates IBM's Shark and Magstar Virtual Tape Servers with Boscov's multiple server platforms including IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  RS/6000 and NT servers. Critical to the success of Boscov's SAN is Shark's Parallel Access Volume (PAV) feature which provides unprecedented performance improvements by enabling multiple applications to simultaneously access the same data.

The Shark Enterprise Storage Server is the high-performance disk storage solution from IBM, the world leader in storage systems, software, services and technology. Built on the foundation of IBM's Seascape Storage Enterprise Architecture(a), Shark works with the industry's leading servers and operating systems including Windows NT, UNIX UNIX
