Borland Presents Golden Gate Internet/Intranet Strategy, Previews New Intranet-Related Products; Customers Get Head Start on Integrating Client/Server and the Internet at Seventh Annual Borland Developers Conference.

ANAHEIM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 29, 1996--In a keynote presentation to more than 1,500 developers at the seventh annual Borland Developers Conference, Borland yesterday presented its overall Internet strategy and demonstrated new technologies, including products from the planned acquisition of Open Environment Corporation. Referred to as the Golden Gate initiative, Borland's strategy bridges traditional client/server software architectures to the emerging Internet-based technologies through an open, scalable solution for more efficient business computing.

In February 1996, Borland outlined a two-phased approach for delivering Internet based solutions. Golden Gate envelopes both phases of Borland's Internet plans: first, Internet-enabled versions of the company's existing products to support building applications on the Internet; and second, Intranet (internal corporate networks leveraging the Internet protocol) solutions for the workgroup market segment. This year Borland has delivered Internet-enabled versions of Delphi, Borland C++ and Visual dBASE. Borland is now well underway with the second phase, in which Borland expects to see the most significant opportunity, and is preparing to deliver new Internet products this year.

This second phase was outlined in greater detail in yesterday's keynote presentation by Paul H. Gross, senior vice president of research and development at Borland. "Although the corporate Intranet market is growing rapidly, the first generation of Internet development tools do not have the maturity of today's client/server tools," Gross said. "Borland's mission is to deliver a solution that combines the best client/server technologies with the emerging Internet technologies. Corporate developers need Internet tools that build on cost-effective client/server technology and offer an open, scalable architecture based on high-performance, reusable components, scalable database technology and application server capabilities."

Borland's Intranet Strategy

Borland's Golden Gate strategy is aimed at making it easier for customers to build Internet-based applications by integrating existing investments in client/server architectures with the emerging Internet technologies. The strategy includes a unique combination of high-performance, object-oriented development tools, such as Borland's Delphi Client/Server Suite; Borland's rapid application development (RAD) environment for Java, code named Latte; IntraBuilder, Borland C++, and Open Environment's Entera technology and related Internet products. Because of the open architectures and robustness of both Borland's development tools and Open Environment's second-generation Entera product line, these technologies work together today, giving developers a head start on Internet/Intranet development projects.

Borland's solution is designed to provide customers with a business advantage through the following:

-- Reduce development and maintenance costs through a family of interoperable development tools based on an open, scalable architecture;

-- Speed access to critical information through the world's fastest optimizing native code compiler technology;

-- Accelerate the creation of Intranet applications for better information management and closer relations with customers and suppliers through Borland's reusable component technology;

-- Utilize existing skills by taking advantage of open, high- performance client/server technology in Internet applications;

-- Eliminate unnecessary retraining and retooling expenses by utilizing Borland's scalable architecture to build large applications that scale from departmental Intranets to secure, large-scale public Internets;

-- Take advantage of open standards through Borland's support for existing and emerging Internet standards such as Java, JavaScript and JDBC, industry standards such as TCP/IP, DCE and CORBA, as well as Microsoft standards such as ActiveX, ISAPI, OLE, DCOM and ODBC; and,

-- Broadly deploy applications with the highest performance and at the lowest cost by building scalable, multi-tier applications with Borland's cross-platform application server technology.

New Internet Technologies Previewed

Borland previewed two new development tools for building high-performance and scalable Internet-based applications:

-- IntraBuilder -- Borland announced and previewed the first point-and-click live data solution that delivers all the functionality of a relational database to the Web. Customers will be able to easily build robust, interactive database solutions applications, such as corporate phone lists and help desk applications, that will run entirely on the Web server, or can be extended to run on any popular browser supporting Java, Java Script or ActiveX controls.

-- Latte -- Borland previewed its cross-platform Java development technology, code named Latte, which provides next-generation RAD tools for building high performance, web-delivered Java applications. Latte will tie together a visual design environment with reusable components, a Java optimized toolset, high-performance compilers, robust database connectivity and distributed computing.
