Borland Outlines Client-Server Strategy at COMDEX; Delphi 95 Highlighted as Cornerstone to Borland's Client-Server Vision.


LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 14, 1994--Borland International Inc. today announced its comprehensive client-server strategy, detailing new products and strategic partnership initiatives the company will implement to maintain a leadership position in the client-server market. At a Comdex press event for more than 100 editors and analysts, Borland also presented the cornerstone of this strategy, its upcoming visual, high-performance application development environment code-named Delphi 95.

Delphi 95 will provide complete client/server capabilities to developers seeking rapid application development, and provides executables that allow immediate scalability from desktop to enterprise data. Demonstrations of the products capabilities will be held at public previews, presented at 11 a.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m. during Comdex in room L3162, on the convention show floor. Pricing information and availability will be announced in March 1995.

Borland's mission is to be a leader in databases, languages and tools to help companies move easily to client/server, said Borland's CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Delphi 95 signifies Borland's transition into the client/server tools market, with a next-generation, high-performance client/server development system A development system used to create applications for a client/server environment. A comprehensive system generally includes a GUI builder for creating the user interface, a fourth-generation language for writing the business logic as well as an interpreter and/or compiler and debugging . Delphi 95 has been in field test for 10 months at more than 500 sites worldwide including major corporations, VARs, systems integrators, consultants, and training organizations.

Borland also announced the availability of the Borland InterBase Workgroup Server on Windows NT and Novell NLM Software that runs in a NetWare server. Although NetWare servers store DOS and Windows applications, they do not execute them. All programs that run in a NetWare server must be compiled into the NLM format. Another key to the client-server vision will be ReportSmith 2.5 for Windows. The reporting and query tool, optimized for SQL database reporting, will ship this quarter, and features live data access, a data dictionary, and data connectivity to promote ease-of-use. And Borland C++ 4.5 with Database Tools has been bundled with the recently announced Borland C++ 4.5 compiler, which features full OLE capabilities, the Borland Database Engine Software from Borland that runs on a Windows client and unifies database access across multiple platforms. Using Borland's own IDAPI interface, it provides a middleware layer between the client and numerous databases, including dBASE, Paradox, Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, Informix, Interbase , and Borland SQL Links 2.0.

Two joint vendor partnerships were detailed at the event. Skip Glass, vice-president of products and platforms for Sybase, discussed the recent joint agreement made between Sybase and Borland to enhance database product integration. Under the terms of the agreement, Borland customers will benefit from superior connectivity options to Sybase data, as well as offering Sybase customers the added performance and ease-of-use currently available in Borland's desktop products.

Bob Perry, vice-president North American operations for INTERSOLV, highlighted how INTERSOLV and Borland will work together to support Open Database Connectivity See ODBC.

Borland will also create an interface for INTERSOLV's PVCS A popular system of version control and configuration management software from Serena Software, Inc., San Mateo, CA, that runs on DOS, Windows, OS/2 and various Unix platforms. It is widely used on PC-based LANs.  Version Manager for future versions of Borland development tools, including dBASE and Paradox for Windows, Borland C++, and Delphi 95.

These strategic partnerships are an integral component of Borland's client/server strategy's. Kahn said, Rand will ensure that Borland customers have the best access to information and support from technology leaders as they move to a client/server environment.
