Quest Software Deploys Borland StarTeam([R]) and CaliberRM[TM] to Manage Code and Requirements Changes Across Globally Distributed Teams

(NASDAQ: QSFT) is relying on Borland's Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) products to increase the predictability and efficiency of its software delivery processes. In all teams that have implemented StarTeam([R]), Quest has seen increases in code reuse, developer productivity, and meeting schedule deadlines.

As a software expert with engineers in over 16 different time zones, it is critical that the development processes behind the over 130 products that Quest markets is as efficient, predictable and effective as possible. To ensure it is, Quest deployed Borland StarTeam([R]) enterprise-wide to standardize its software change and configuration management process and has recently begun the process of implementing Borland CaliberRM([TM]) for requirements definition and management.

"Some development teams felt that their previous source code control system was unreliable, so to keep this from impacting our customers, we shifted valuable development resources into overhead roles, such as build managers and version control experts. Quest operates over 20 research and development labs around the world, which requires significant cross-team and cross-product collaboration. This collaborative development process resulted in builds as large as 60MBs moving across the network. Using Borland StarTeam, the Quest Engineering Services team could more easily transfer these large files utilizing less bandwidth, and automatically schedule the process rather than starting it manually. This has already resulted in significant cost savings and improved performance. In fact, in one instance, build times went from approximately six hours to 40 minutes, an 80% reduction in build time.

The real-time feedback enabled by Borland StarTeam is bringing greater visibility and predictability to Quest's overall development processes. Unlike the previous tool used by the company for managing change requests, Borland StarTeam provides management with the ability to easily gather real-time metrics and produce those metrics in a timely, automated or ad hoc manner for meetings. In the past, reporting required a great deal of customization and varied by team.

In addition, Borland StarTeam has also enabled Quest to evolve to a common components architecture, which facilitates code reuse among all members of the team. This is particularly useful because many products share component requirements for security, encryption and other protocols. Using Borland StarTeam, Quest has been able to greatly enhance its developers' access to previously written code in a timely manner and in the right release structure, which has enabled significant code reuse.

In conjunction with Borland StarTeam, some Quest early adopter teams are using Borland CaliberRM to improve communication around software requirements and to conduct impact analysis related to requirements changes. Prior to using Borland CaliberRM, these product teams were leveraging Microsoft([R]) Word documents and email. Today, requirements are entered into and managed in Borland CaliberRM. Using the Discussion Tab feature, interactions related to specific requirements are entered into the tool, which enables requirement communications to be captured and documented, instead of lost in unstructured communication mechanisms such as email.
