Risks and Costs of Java(TM) Application Server Selection

Borland Software Corporation (company) Borland Software Corporation - A company that sells a variety of PC software development and database systems. Borland was founded in 1983 and initially became famous for their low-cost software, particularly Turbo Pascal, Turbo C, and Turbo Prolog.  (Nasdaq NM: BORL) today announced that the Borland(R) AppServer(TM) 4.5.1 has been given the highest rating in quantitative testing and the highest qualitative rating in the just released Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) Middleware Technology Evaluation series review of Java(TM) 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE(TM)) application servers.

"J2EE-based application servers are increasingly becoming the engine rooms of Web-enabled applications," said Anna Liu, project manager, middleware technology evaluation, CSIRO. "They provide the scalable, high-performance Java(TM) infrastructure for processing simultaneous requests from users for Web Services (1) Loosely, any online service delivered over the Web. Such usage appears in articles from non-technical sources, but not in IT-oriented publications, because definition #2 below describes the correct use of the term. . Because of their importance to IT managers, CSIRO Middleware Technology Evaluation series has evaluated J2EE Application A J2EE application or an enterprise application is any deployable unit of J2EE functionality. This can be a single J2EE module or a group of modules packaged into an EAR file along with a J2EE application deployment descriptor.  Servers from Borland, IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. We found that Borland achieved excellent ratings in both quantitative and qualitative testing."

Quantitative results

The quantitative tests involve performance and stress testing Determining the durability of a system by pushing it to its limits. Stress testing a network is performed by transmitting excessive numbers of packets or attempting to break in illegally.  in identical deployment environments.

The table shows that Borland received the highest rating in performance.

Qualitative results

The qualitative terms compare the products by their feature set. The table below summarizes the qualitative research Qualitative research

How the J2EE application servers were analyzed

The CSIRO report provides detailed analysis, evaluation and comparison of six application server technologies -- Borland, IBM, Fujitsu, SilverStream, BEA and JBoss (open source). Test applications were built so that CSIRO could understand the products' capabilities.

"The CSIRO report confirms Borland's excellence in J2EE-based application servers," said Andrew Munro Andrew Munro (d. 1451 × 1454) [de Munro, de Munroy], or Aindréas Mac an Rothaich as his Gaelic kindred name, was a Scottish churchman active in the 15th century, undoubtedly given his surname a native of Ross of Clan Munro. , managing director at Borland Australia and New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia. The capital is Wellington; the largest city and leading port is Auckland. . "The report also demonstrates Borland's continued leadership in providing best-in-class deployment solutions."

IT departments challenged by selection of application servers

The CSIRO report provides an industry comparison important for informed decision-making and helps reduce the risks and costs of J2EE application server selection.

"The CSIRO report is an important industry comparison because it gives IT managers a third party review of the different products available. Therefore, when making a decision about which J2EE application server, they can get one that best meets their needs. This report highlights the options open to them."

"The key for J2EE application server users is to understand their requirements and to select a product that matches them," said Liu. "The crowded IT market challenges IT departments who have to evaluate and select an application server to meet their needs. Because the risks and costs of selecting inappropriate technology are high, and business applications differ, there is rarely a `one-size-fits-all' product match. Different J2EE products have different strengths and weaknesses, so the key is to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the products early in the development cycle."

"CSIRO will regularly publish updates to this report as products move to major new versions and new products are available. Evaluations in several new J2EE product releases are underway now and we expect to release an updated report in January 2002," said Anna Liu.
