Borland AppServer Demonstrates Superior Performance on New Sun System.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 13, 2001

Borland's J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) A platform from Sun for building distributed enterprise applications. J2EE services are performed in the middle tier between the user's machine and the enterprise's databases and legacy information systems. (TM)-Compliant Application Server

Delivers High Performance at a Lower Total Cost of Ownership

Borland Software Corporation (company) Borland Software Corporation - A company that sells a variety of PC software development and database systems. Borland was founded in 1983 and initially became famous for their low-cost software, particularly Turbo Pascal, Turbo C, and Turbo Prolog.  (Nasdaq NM: BORL) today announced the immediate availability of full ECperf(TM) Benchmark testing results that demonstrate the high performance of Borland(R) AppServer(TM) 4.5 as a fast, highly scalable and cost-effective application server. The Borland ECperf results have been verified by the ECperf Expert Group and posted to http://www.borland.com/appserver/ecperf and to http://www.theserverside.com/ecperf, the official site for hosting ECperf results.

"Today's announcement reinforces Borland's technology leadership and adherence to industry standards that enable Borland customers to maximize the performance of their applications while achieving a lower total cost of ownership," said Alan Shoap, vice president of enterprise solutions at Borland. "The high level of performance demonstrated by Borland AppServer A Web-based application server for Windows NT/2000 and Unix from Borland that is built on top of the popular VisiBroker CORBA ORB infrastructure. Introduced in 1998, the product is the key component of Borland's Enterprise Server suite.  is a direct result of its unique scalability and clustering capabilities as well as efficient resource management. These features map directly into performance and cost savings for both server and database hardware requirements for Java(TM) 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE(TM)) deployments."

Borland conducted tests of the Borland AppServer at Sun Microsystems' benchmarking facility and was instrumental in providing these results for the launch of Sun's new 8-way Sun Fire(TM) V880 which was announced in late October, see http://www.sun.com/smi/Press/sunflash/2001-10/sunflash.20011029.5.html. The results publicly demonstrated the world's first system ever to run ECperf Benchmarks. Using Borland AppServer 4.5, an 8-way Sun Fire V880, Oracle 8i and Java 1.3.1, the resulting world-record performance of 5961.77 BBops/min@Std and price performance ratio of $51/Bbops/min@Std, confirms Borland AppServer as a fast, highly scalable and cost-effective application server. Today's announcement follows the recent posting of the Borland(R) AppServer(TM) Kit for the ECperf(TM) 1.0 Benchmark to enable companies to independently measure the real-world performance and scalability of Borland AppServer.

About ECperf

ECperf, composed of the Specification and the Kit, is a benchmark designed to measure performance and scalability. Prototyped and built in conjunction with Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (language, programming) Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition - (J2EE) Sun's Java platform for multi-tier server-oriented enterprise applications.

The basis of J2EE is Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB).

server vendors, it was developed under the Java Community Process Sun's system for allowing third parties to submit requests for new features to Java. JCP is a formal process that must be adhered to, and fees are involved. In 1999, Sun submitted Java to the ECMA standards body, but withdrew its J2SE specification later in the year. . The audience is both the J2EE user and server vendor. ECperf can assist the J2EE user in understanding J2EE scalability and tuning. The J2EE application A J2EE application or an enterprise application is any deployable unit of J2EE functionality. This can be a single J2EE module or a group of modules packaged into an EAR file along with a J2EE application deployment descriptor.  server vendor can use ECperf to improve and showcase product performance. The ECperf Specification Benchmark is available at http://jcp.org/jsr/detail/4.jsp. For more information on ECperf, see http://java.sun.com/j2ee/ecperf.
