Borland Announces InterBase 4 for Unix; A Fully Scalable SQL Server Database for Windows and UNIX.

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 25, 1995--Borland International, Inc. today announced InterBase 4, a platform independent, scalable SQL server for Solaris, SunOS, HP-UX HP's version of Unix that runs on its 9000 family. It is based on SVID and incorporates features from BSD Unix along with several HP innovations.

(operating system) HP-UX - The version of Unix running on Hewlett-Packard workstations.
, AIX (Advanced Interactive eXecutive) IBM's Unix-based operating system which runs on its Intellistation workstations and pSeries, p5, iSeries and i5 server families. , SCO (The SCO Group, Lindon, UT, www.sco.com) A leading vendor of Unix operating systems for the x86 platform. SCO had also offered Linux, but abandoned the line in the spring of 2003. The SCO Group is the combination of two companies: Utah-based Caldera, Inc.  and AT&T Unix platforms. InterBase 4 is designed for enterprise and workgroup computing environments and is available on Windows 3.1, Windows NT (also runs under Windows 95), and all popular Unix platforms.

"Borland's InterBase has become a widely accepted SQL server database for Fortune 1000 companies that insist upon scalability, portability, and performance," said Larry Brand, general manager of Borland's InterBase Division. "InterBase 4 is the only RDBMS (Relational DataBase Management System) See relational database and DBMS.

whose engine can scale from the PC desktop to advanced UNIX servers. InterBase supports large development efforts, by providing a scalable solution that addresses the issues of portability, reusability and maintainability throughout the life cycle of the database."

InterBase offers superior performance for mission-critical operations such as stock trading, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, and network management, while adhering to industry standards such as SQL SQL

"As a firm specializing in custom marketing and research applications for the hotel and meeting industry, we must be able to adapt our systems to a variety of platforms," said Joe Carney, director of MIS for Hospitality Data Services. "With Borland's InterBase, we can create and deploy the application quickly and with low development overhead. InterBase allows us to adapt the system to the client's current network/operating system, without limiting their choices in the future.

"Not only are the up-front costs low, but administrative costs administrative costs,

during the life cycle of the product are significantly less than relational databases from other vendors," said Carney. "Our clients don't need an expensive DBA to maintain their system on site, their current staff can easily handle routine chores like backup and restore with the Windows-based server management tools included with InterBase," stated Carney. "Costs are kept down, by reducing the number of support personnel needed.

"When people ask why I've picked Borland over other products I tell them that, Borland Client/Server tools are the best!"

InterBase Release 4 Technology

The InterBase 4.0 architecture offers a multi-client and multi-threaded server for enhanced speed and optimal use of resources. Its unique versioning engine ensures high data availability for concurrent transaction processing and decision-support users. InterBase provides leading technology with lock-free transactions that require no additional programming, while providing a time-consistent, repeatable result for every query.

Other elements that make up the InterBase Advanced Feature Set include:

-- Multi-Dimensional Arrays which can store as many as 16 dimensions in a single field simplifying application design and increasing performance

-- Automatic two-phase commit and distributed recovery which ensure reliability and reduced system administration

-- Stored procedures, event alerters, triggers and BLOb filters, provide reliable functionality to automate database processes

-- Open Systems: supports ODBC, ANSI (American National Standards Institute, New York, www.ansi.org) A membership organization founded in 1918 that coordinates the development of U.S. voluntary national standards in both the private and public sectors. All programs that run in a NetWare server must be compiled into the NLM format. They are typically written in C and use Novell's libraries.  versions of InterBase running on Intel processors are priced at $650 per server (includes 2 users), additional concurrent users are $195, and 10 packs are $1,670.
