The practice was known in ancient Babylon, Egypt, Greece, and Rome, as well as in modern Europe and to some extent  Centre at the school's main Sudbury campus will house the college's two new apprenticeship programs, which will begin admitting students as early as September 2006.

Its Dec. 15 sod turning ceremony acknowledged the combined support of the federal and provincial governments, along with Union Gas.

"We spearheaded this initiative because we saw economic challenges that face the North and want to be part of a positive force in developing solutions," says Don Van Daele, Union Gas' utility service manager for Sudbury.

Georges Ansell, a director on the board of governors, is pleased with the partnerships and that the project is moving forward.

"It's critical at this point in time in the economy of the North that we train more trades people. This is especially true for francophones," Ansell says.

Contracts are being tendered out to construct the 20,000-square-foot building in order to accommodate a growing need for skilled labour.

, and Heavy Equipment Mechanic. The first eight months of both programs will be in-school work, followed by a series of four-month co-ops and four-month in-school portions until the two-year requirement is fulfilled.

Dean of Technology and Trades Daniel Giroux says meeting the demands of industry was one of the reasons those two programs were chosen. Since Boreal's doors opened nine years ago, trades have been a part of the college's offerings, (millwright mill·wright

"(The students) had to go to different places to do some other courses ... it was a huge problem for the college," Giroux says.

They have also had strong partnerships with the French public and Catholic school boards, particularly in the Auto Mechanics An auto mechanic or motor mechanic in Australian English is a mechanic who specialises in automobile maintenance, repair, and sometimes modification. A mechanic may be knowledgeable in working on all parts of a variety of car makes or may specialize either in a specific area  program.

For the last three years, discussion of, and saving for, a new trades building has been in progress.

In October 2005, a forum was held where interest was expressed in going ahead with the project.

Boreal has nine of the 12 Ontario French high school boards in its geographic area (the other three are covered by a college in Ottawa). Giroux says approval and feedback on the project from the those boards is important because they are one of the college's main feeders of students.

The building will be comprised of two main workshops. One 7,000-sq.-ft. shop will house the welding and fabrication students with 25 welding booths. The other shop will be a 10,000-sq.-ft. space designated for the heavy equipment and mechanical trades programs. Of that area, 3,000 sq. ft. (two bays) will be available for the automotive mechanics program.

The remaining 3,000 sq. ft of the building will provide showers, classrooms and some office and custodial space.

Equipment for the shops is presently being worked out under a separate budget.

The college expects to hire two or three full-time instructors, with a September intake of 20 students per program. Once the program is established, Giroux says the college will consider offering other trades such as construction, electrical, plumbing and masonry masonry: see brick; concrete; stonework; tile.
