As a part of an accelerating program of expansion in the U.K., Borders will soon operate stores in Liverpool; Beckton, East London East London, city (1991 pop. 240,474), Eastern Cape, SE South Africa, on the Indian Ocean. The city grew around a British military post founded in 1847. "Borders currently has seven stores in development for the United Kingdom, including three that are scheduled to open within the next two months in Leicester, Stockport and the Lakeside Retail Park in Thurrock. By mid-2003, we hope to have a total of 21 superstores operating in the U.K."

Borders introduced its unique book, music, movie and cafe retailing concept to the U.K. in 1998 when it opened its first store on Oxford Street in downtown London. Since then, the company has opened an additional 13 stores, bringing the present total to 14.
