Booze sold to underage teenagers.

TWO off licences and three pubs in the Wrexham county area were caught selling alcohol to underage people.

They were caught after a recent exercise jointly organised by Wrexham Council's Trading Standards Service and North Wales Police North Wales Police (Welsh: Heddlu Gogledd Cymru) is the Home Office police force responsible for policing North Wales. The headquarters are in Colwyn Bay, with divisional headquarters in St Asaph, Caernarfon and Wrexham. .

The volunteers, two girls aged 15, were sold alcohol in five of 10 premises visited across the county.

 and one member of bar staff received pounds 80 fixed penalty notices Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) were introduced in Great Britain in the 1950s to deal with minor parking offences. Originally used by police and traffic wardens, their use has extended to other public officials and authorities, as has the range of offences for which they can be used.  and the licensees are under scrutiny.

Staff at the other premises requested Proof of Age and as a result refused to sell.

The exercise follows on from similar operations throughout the year.

In previous exercises in which off licences throughout the Wrexham area have been targeted, only three test purchase attempts resulted in sales.

The remaining 43 attempts resulted in refusals, often following requests to provide proof of age.

Inspector Alex Goss n. 1. Gorse.  of North Wales Police said: "It is disappointing that premises have sold alcohol to young people who are obviously underage.

"It is something which we and our fellow organisations in The Wrexham Community Safety Partnership take very seriously and we will continue to actively police this issue".

Councillor David Bithell, Wrexham Council's lead member for environment and transport said: "I'm pleased to see that funding provided by the Community Safety Partnership is leading to effective operations aimed at tackling the serious problem of underage drinking."
