"With so many of our IT assets outside our offices, we were concerned there would be a breach that would impact the entire company," said Brian Oswald, senior desktop architect at Booz Allen Hamilton. "Our consultants were facing stringent security requirements to enter external client networks and while manual patching is a slow process to begin with, it is nearly impossible to manually patch laptops that you don't see for months at a time," added Oswald.

faced a slow and cumbersome patching process that often left workstations and the IT network vulnerable. In addition, a team of up to 30 people were dedicated at certain times in the month to the manual patching process.

Following a review of five solutions over a six month period, Booz Allen Hamilton selected PatchLink Update to replace the organization's manual patching process and provide a centralized cen·tral·ize

, automated patch management The installation of patches from a software vendor onto an organization's computers. Patching thousands of PCs and servers is a major issue. A patch should be applied to test machines first before deployment, and the testing environments must represent all the users' PCs with their unique  system for its mobile infrastructure. PatchLink Update enables Booz Allen to handle mass security updates across the IT network, installs new software and patches, and removes decommissioned software with minimal interruption for each user. This innovative approach has allowed Booz Allen Hamilton to reach a high level of patch compliance, with 82 to 87 percent of laptops patched and up-to-date.

With PatchLink Update, Booz Allen Hamilton's IT team can efficiently and effectively determine if laptops are patched and compliant as soon as they log onto the network. The automated process also allows the IT team to push out the latest patches remotely from any location.

users that do not access the corporate network for months at a time, the IT team provides remote network access, enabling users to receive automated patch updates 'on the road' or at the client site. This approach also ensures consultants meet the security requirements they need to access client networks. Company consultants armed with the latest patches and software can now enter a client's network without the fear of being locked out at any moment.

"PatchLink Update has moved the organization from a reactive security approach to a proactive security strategy," said Oswald. "Before PatchLink, we couldn't keep up with vulnerability patching and software upgrades. Now, we have a comprehensive, automated vulnerability management solution that meets the needs of our mobile organization and I'm proud to say, we have not had any viruses since deploying PatchLink."
