The number claiming jobseekers' allowance decreased last month by 1700 to 76,200.

The number in work rose by 25,000 to a high of 2.54million over the last three months - a record employment rate of 76.7 per cent.

This topped the rate for the rest of the UK and most EU countries.

Scottish Secretary Des Browne said: "This is an exceptional set of results reflecting the strong performance of the Scottish labour market."
