Cory Boosinger pitched a no-hitter, striking out four and walking five, to lead the Eugene Challengers to a 12-0 triumph over the Redmond Flame at the Papa's Pizza American Legion baseball tournament Saturday at Swede Johnson Stadium.

James Mannion was 2-for-3 with a solo home run and double, and Ryan Royster smacked a two-run home run to lead the Challengers' 13-hit attack.

Cody Newell was 2-for-2 with a double and RBI, and Corey Kent was 3-for-3 with two RBIs for the Eugene team.

The Challengers (27-7 overall) will meet the Chico (Calif.) Nuts today at 2:30 p.m. in one of two semifinal games.

The Kent (Wash.) Bulldogs and Danville (Calif.) Hoots play in the other semifinal at 4:30 p.m., and the championship game is set for 7 p.m.

Play begins at 9 a.m. today, with West Linn facing the Eagle Vipers. The second game of the day matches the Eureka (Calif.) Falcons and the Taylor Kingsmen of Portland at 11:30 a.m.

Kent-led U.S. team

wins Global Games gold

DALLAS - Daniel Brown had 18 points and nine assists Saturday to lead the USA Junior World Championship team to a 104-80 victory over the Global Games Select Team in the gold-medal game of the 2003 Global Games.

The U.S. team, coached by University of Oregon men's basketball coach Ernie Kent, was 5-0 in the tournament. The team will travel to Thessaloniki, Greece, to play in the seventh annual FIBA Junior World Championship, which begins Thursday.

Brown's Illinois teammate, Deron Williams, was named co-MVP of the tournament, and USA forward Paul Davis of Michigan State was named to the 10-player all-tournament team.

"We told the team if we defend these teams in the tournament, and if we can defend in the World Championship, we'll have an excellent opportunity to get out and get a lot of easy buckets in transition," Kent said. "The difference between this team this year and last year is that they have been coached by good college coaches, and when you talk about defense and put stuff on the board and work on stuff in practice, they're able to understand it and pick it up a lot quicker than last year's team."

Creswell team splits

softball tourney games

NEWBERG - The Creswell Fury split their first two games at the Tri-State Championships 18-and-under softball tournament Saturday, losing to Coos Bay 8-1 and defeating the Salem Vikings 9-1.

Creswell (5-5 overall) had just two hits in the loss to Coos Bay, both in the fourth inning when the Fury scored their only run. Dani Taylor singled and later scored on a single by Betty Lou McClellan.

In the victory over Salem, Kaylea Colley was 2-for-3 with a triple, double and RBI, Katie Plumb was 1-for-3 with three RBIs and Taylor was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Kayley Saxon gave up just three hits and struck out six.

at Woodburn Dragstrip

WOODBURN - Matthew Bueler of Eugene finished second in the Import Sportsman B division Saturday at the Import and Sports Compact Challenge at Woodburn Dragstrip.

Division winners were Jim Edwards of Portland (Import Pro), Ron Henderson of Vancouver, Wash. (Import Sportsman A), Derrick Jackson of McMinnville (Import Sportsman B) and Roger Wolf of Dundee (Street Bike Shootout).
