Boole & Babbage Ships Windows NT-to-Mainframe Backup Solution; Stage3 Now Integrates with Arcada Backup Exec.

CONYERS, Ga.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 27, 1995--The Storage Division of Boole & Babbage Inc. (NASDAQ: BOOL) today announced that it began shipping Stage3 for the Microsoft Windows NT operating system.

Stage3 extends the service of Arcada Backup Exec, the leading resident backup software for Windows NT, by transporting selected backup files directly to an MBS mainframe. Stage3 also supports the Microsoft Windows NT Backup utility, which is included in the Windows NT server software.

Stage3 appears as an option on the Arcada Backup Exec screen and functions as a virtual tape device that transports data across an LU6.2 link via Microsoft's SNA Server or a TCP/IP link to the MVS mainframe. Files are subsequently stored on disk in (RRDS) VSAM files or written directly onto mainframe tape as sequential files. Sessions are grouped into logical tape volumes referenced by a Stage3 control file. On the mainframe, Stage3 integrates with existing hierarchical storage management systems such as DFSMS, DF/HSM, SAMS:DISK, FDR/ABR or CA-ASM2, and takes advantage of the security features provided by products such as RACF and ACF-2.

The Stage3 architecture, Enterprise Transport for Linking and Communicating (E-TLC), combined with a data packaging method for moving data in sessions, produces fast backup and restore speeds. "We don't move data using file transfer methods as do other products in this market," said Pat Pagano, vice president of development at Emprise Technologies, developer of Stage3. "Data throughput is dynamically governed by a sliding window algorithm that yields backup speeds that are two-to-three times faster than any file transfer-based product."
