This year is the 35th anniversary of the Coretta Scott King Coretta Scott King (April 27, 1927 – January 30, 2006) was the wife of the assassinated civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr., and a noted civil rights leader, author, singer, and founder and former president of the King Center in Atlanta, Georgia.  Breakfast, where one of the more prestigious awards for children's literature children's literature, writing whose primary audience is children.

The earliest of what came to be regarded as children's literature was first meant for adults.
 is presented at the Annual Conference of the American Library Association American Library Association, founded 1876, organization whose purpose is to increase the usefulness of books through the improvement and extension of library services. . Those early founders and supporters worked tirelessly to get us to this point.

It was a memorable gift to our community to have the award, the 2004 winners, and the jury featured in "American Dream Classics for Kids" (March-April 2004 issue) in Black Issues Book Review.
