Books for Freedom, a non-profit organization A non-profit organization (abbreviated "NPO", also "non-profit" or "not-for-profit") is a legally constituted organization whose primary objective is to support or to actively engage in activities of public or private interest without any commercial or monetary profit purposes.  working to send desperately needed books to Afghanistan, announced today that its first shipment of over 20,000 volumes has safely arrived in Afghanistan. Books for Freedom is a grass-roots effort that was started after its founding members heard a National Public Radio story about the need for books in Afghanistan, and started to organize a response to the dismal dis·mal

"Books for Freedom hopes to aid in rebuilding the country of Afghanistan by donating books in local and foreign languages that will help to create a better way of life for Afghan men, women, and children. By supplying books on all topics, we hope to increase knowledge and expand minds that were straitjacketed for so many years under the Taliban," said Melissa Street, President and Founder of Books for Freedom.

Street organized a shipment to Afghanistan that left New Jersey July 11, 2002. Among the 20,000 books in the first shipment are volumes on engineering, agriculture, medical and legal topics, as well as novels and other literature. The books are in both English and local languages.

Donations included 12,000 volumes from John Wiley John Wiley may refer to:

The School is located in the Borough of Manhattan in New York City, and is one of eight ABA-approved law schools in that city. ; and over 4,000 titles from the estate of Mohammad Ali Jazayery, the late founder of the University of Texas Middle East Studies Department. Alabama-based Dorsey Trailers generously paid for the first shipment of books to be sent to Kabul, Afghanistan.

Books for Freedom is collecting books in English, as well as the predominant pre·dom·i·nant

Local book drives are in the planning stages for the next shipment of books, which is set to go out in early spring 2003.
