Books That Work draws new investment from Hearst.

Books That Work will use the proceeds to enhance its product development and distribution and its on-line capabilities. In the area of development the company will invest in two foundation technologies: 3D graphics and networking. In graphics, Books That Work is a pioneer in advanced 3D visualization Using the computer to convert data into picture form. The most basic visualization is that of turning transaction data and summary information into charts and graphs. Visualization is used in computer-aided design (CAD) to render screen images into 3D models that can be viewed from all  software for the home. In networking, the company intends to expand its on-line presence, while working closely with Hearst's soon-to-be launched on-line home and garden network, HomeArts.

The company will also continue to work with Hearst and other large publishers on joint development opportunities. Later this year, Books That Work and the Hearst New Media & Technology division will co-publish the "1996 Popular Mechanics

On the distribution front, Books That Work will expand its national sales and marketing organization. In addition to titles developed internally, the company intends to distribute other titles in its "home leisure" category.
