TAKE Sharpe and put him nearly a hundred years in the future and in the Boer War and you get the flavour of this book.

It's far from a Sharpe copy, though, and well worth a read from any fan of adventure series such as Cromwell's favourite creation or Hornblower.

This is a tale of war and bravery, goodies versus baddies, with intrigue thrown in, as well as a bit or romantic interest.

This fourth novel in the Fonthill series is set in the First Boer War The First Boer War (Dutch: Eerste Boerenoorlog, Afrikaans: Eerste Vryheidsoorlog, literally First Freedom War) also known as the First Anglo-Boer War or the Transvaal War, was fought from 16 December 1880 until 23 March 1881. , following our hero's exploits at battles such as Rorke's Drift.

Fonthill and his faithful Welsh sidekick 352 Jenkins have to scout deep into enemy territory and after narrowly escaping with their lives, have to hold the summit of Majuba Hill in the fierce fighting.

The action scenes are written well and you quickly get drawn into the characters as the storyline rattles along.

I've come late to the Fonthill series, but will be making sure I catch up with his earlier adventures. *****
