Bonds with neonatal staff remembered. The article "Baby Zack touches many Lives during his short Life", published in the December/ January 2005/2006 issue of Kai Tiaki Nursing New Zealand, has to be one of the most beautiful, moving articles I have read. Lynette Will tells the story beautifully. First of all I would Like to send my condolences to Zack's family and secondly congratulate the nursing staff, particularly Lynette, for identifying Zack's needs and putting plans in place to accommodate them. I myself lost a baby ten years ago and still have a bond with the neonatal staff who cared for him. I will never be able to thank those women enough for their Love and support during my son's illness and death. I am now a registered nurse and have worked for three years in oncology and six months in haematology. During my time in oncology I also asked myself the question, "Can we care too much or get too involved?" Lynette answers it correctly when she says, "The key is to Look at whose interests are being served." I feel nurses should be allowed to care at the level they feel comfortable but it is important to know how to protect ourselves. Good Luck with your future studies, Lynette. It sounds like you have found your niche. Daryl Pollock, RN, Palmerston North |
