7million in Prize Bond winnings has been paid out already this year, it was revealed yesterday.

The Prize Bond Company said the value of prizes has increased by 11 per cent in 2005.

Of the 72,000 winners so far, more than 20,000 from Dublin shared EUR2million.

The weekly draws are held in An Post's GPO in Dublin and winnings are tax-free.

Among prizes is a monthly EUR150,000 jackpot.

Prize Bond Company boss Michael O'Keefe said the increasing popularity of bonds as "a secure investment option and an ideal gift solution" has led to a rise in "the value of prizes being awarded".

The amount invested in bonds has risen from around e270million in 1999 to EUR506million last year.

Financial experts have pointed out there is no guaranteed return, just a chance of winning a prize.
