Bomis.Com Browser Kills Pop-Up Advertising!
"We anticipate a large public demand for this," says Bomis cofounder Jimmy Wales. "People absolutely hate these pop-up advertisements." In addition, the new Bomis Browser will include a feature that will allow people to anonymously and voluntarily choose to share their browsing history with Bomis. "We're going to compile the data to come up with the most extensive data on what is popular on the Internet. We are additionally going to use the data to refine our search engine's capabilities to help us find good sites to include in the Bomis index," said Wales.
Sharing data with Bomis is strictly voluntary. A dialogue box will open, with the browser allowing the user to elect whether or not they want to participate. Bomis.Com is unique in that it is a member built web-index, in which people register themselves for membership (it's free), receive a password, and then are able to build rings on subjects of interest to them. This approach has created a great community feel and made Bomis.Com a highly popular web portal on the Internet.
Located in San Diego California, Bomis.Com (www.Bomis.Com) was founded in November 1996 by Jimmy Wales and Tim Shell. An irreverent, smart and open-minded alternative to boring web portals and search engines, Bomis.Com is fast becoming one of the most popular portals on the web. It's been a regular fixture on the Hot 100 ( http://www.100hot.com/home.chtml ) web sites, appearing every week since the summer of 1998. With over 1.4 million net surfers visiting last February alone, visitors and members from 64 countries have become a part of the Bomis.Com community.
