.A) (TSX:BBD.B) today announced that it received an order from the Greater Toronto Transit Authority (GO Transit GO Transit (AAR reporting marks GOT), officially known as the Greater Toronto Transit Authority (GTTA), is Canada's first, and Ontario's only, interregional public transit system, established to link Toronto with the surrounding regions of the Greater Toronto ) for the supply of a new-generation of 20 BiLevel(a) commuter rail vehicles Rail vehicles are vehicles capable of rolling on rail tracks. This includes:
  • locomotives
  • rolling stock
  • Passenger cars
, adding to its existing fleet of 341 Bombardier-built commuter railcars. Valued at $55 million Cdn, the contract calls for the design, manufacture and delivery of the new commuter vehicles.

"The Bombardier BiLevel vehicle developed in North America has become one of our flagship products because of its undisputed economical performance and shortest delivery schedule in the industry", said William Spurr, President of Bombardier Transportation, North America. On top of offering 70 per cent more capacity than single-level coaches, the BiLevel vehicles' maintenance costs are substantially lower as well. "This vehicle is a popular choice for today's commuter rail industry because it is one of the largest-capacity cars in the world designed for maximum commuter passenger comfort", added Spurr.

GO Transit has ordered a vehicle configuration that is accessible to the physically challenged. Each vehicle offers total capacity of 378 passengers (133 seated and 245 standees) on two full decks and intermediate end decks. This unique design allows for higher ceilings and better seating, stairway and door positioning. The low-level platform doors let a full carload carload

, a key feature for GO Transit's popular commuter routes. These vehicles comply with Transport Canada's most recent regulations and are manufactured using Bombardier's latest platform design.

The first Bombardier BiLevel vehicle, which was designed in collaboration with GO Transit, went into service in 1978. Since then, Bombardier has produced some 660 BiLevel cars, which are operated by different public transit authorities in North America, enhancing its features over time.

The vehicles will be built at Bombardier's Thunder Bay, Ontario, manufacturing facility. Production will begin immediately and first deliveries are expected in late summer of 2003.
