Bombardier Receives a 10 Bi-Level Commuter Car Order for Seattle Area.


NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 11, 1999--

Bombardier Transportation Bombardier Transportation is the rail equipment division of the Bombardier group. Bombardier Transportation is the world’s largest company in the rail equipment manufacturing and servicing industry. Its headquarters are in Berlin.  was awarded a contract by Sound Transit Sound Transit has been the popular name of Washington state's Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority since 1996. It was formed in 1993 by the Snohomish, King, and Pierce County Councils. , which serves the greater Seattle area, for the manufacture and supply of 10 bi-level commuter rail passenger coaches for the operation of the Tacoma-to-Seattle commuter rail service. The contract is valued at US $17 million.

The commuter railcars for Sound Transit are based on the Bombardier bi-level design, the largest in North America. Each car is designed to accommodate 138 seated and up to 160 standing riders each. They are among the world's largest commuter rail coaches, with an arrangement of two full decks and intermediate-level end decks that permit higher ceilings and better seating. The low-level platform doors allow full carloads of passengers on or off the coaches within 90 seconds and minimize boarding congestion The condition of a network when there is not enough bandwidth to support the current traffic load.
