The design provides 70% more passenger area than single-level rail cars within a similar length and up to 30% savings in operating costs. The cars to be provided to the AMT will have 150 seats and standing room accommodations for up to 215 additional passengers.

Carbodies for the BiLevel cars will be manufactured at Bombardier Transportation's Thunder Bay manufacturing facility. Final assembly and commissioning of the cars will be completed by CAD Railway Services in the Montreal borough of Lachine. Bombardier expects it will provide business to some 35 Quebec suppliers as part of this contract.

BACKGROUNDER

Bombardier(i) BiLevel(i) Commuter Cars for AMT

The Agence Metropolitaine de Transport (AMT) has selected Bombardier Transportation to provide 22 BiLevel commuter cars for service on its Montreal / Dorion-Rigaud line.

The aluminum carbody of the Bombardier BiLevel cars has two main levels of passenger seating with a smaller intermediate level at each end. This design provides 70 percent more passenger area within the length of a single-level rail car and up to a 30-percent saving in operating costs. For this reason, BiLevel commuter rail cars offer AMT a significant increase in the capacity of the Montreal / Dorion-Rigaud line without the need to increase station platform lengths.

The BiLevel car's architecture provides both high passenger capacity and superior ease of access. Two double-wide doors on each side of the lower level provide quick and easy access to the cars, and the wide aisle ways and stairs facilitate passenger flow within the cars. The cars to be provided to AMT will have 150 seats and can accommodate up to 215 additional standing passengers.

The Bombardier BiLevel commuter car is the design chosen by more transportation authorities than any other in North America. More than 700 BiLevel cars are in daily service at ten different commuter rail authorities in the United States and Canada. BiLevel commuter cars are proven in service in a wide variety of operating climates and conditions. Commuter rail services using BiLevel technology include GO Transit in Toronto, Metrolink in Los Angeles, Sound Transit in Seattle, West Coast Express in Vancouver, Coaster in San Diego, the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) is a tri-county federal public transit authority operated in Pompano Beach, Florida. The organization was created on July 1, 2003 by the Florida Legislature and enacted by the Florida Department of Transportation.  in Miami, Trinity Railway Express The Trinity Railway Express (or TRE) is a regional rail commuter line in the Dallas/Fort Worth mass transit system. It was established by an interlocal agreement between Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) and the Fort Worth Transportation Authority (The T).  in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Altamont Commuter Express The Altamont Commuter Express (also known as ACE, pronounced "ace") is a regional rail service in California connecting Stockton with San Jose. It is named for the Altamont Pass, through which it travels.  out of Stockton, California, the Peninsula Commuter Service between San Jose and San Francisco, and the Virginia Railway Express The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) is a commuter rail service that connects the Northern Virginia area with Washington, DC. The VRE operates on two lines, the Fredericksburg line, which starts from Fredericksburg, Virginia, and the Manassas line, which starts from Broad Run  into Washington DC.

Bombardier BiLevel commuter rail cars include up-to-date design improvements that ensure compliance with the latest regulatory and industry requirements, including those of Transport Canada, the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) was created in 1966 as a division of the U.S. Department of Transportation to promote rail transportation and safety.

The FRA is one of 10 agencies within the Department of Transportation concerned with intermodal transportation.
and the American Public Transportation Association The American Public Transportation Association is a Washington, DC based non-profit organization that serves as an advocate for the advancement of public transportation programs and initiatives in the United States since the organization's founding in 1882. .

Four of the BiLevel cars to be provided to the AMT will be "cab cars" which are equipped with a driver's cab. When placed on the end of the train opposite the locomotive, these cars can be used to control the locomotive from back of the train. On return trips, the driver simply transfers controls from the locomotive to the remote location in the BiLevel cab car at the back of the train and operates the train from there. Cab cars eliminate the need to turn entire trains around for return trips, making equipment available faster and improving operating efficiency.

The BiLevel commuter car's spacious interiors are heated and air conditioned. Ride comfort is enhanced by a pneumatic suspension that supports the car on large air springs.

Aluminum car bodies for the BiLevel vehicles are constructed at Bombardier's manufacturing facilities in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Final assembly and commissioning of the AMT cars will be completed in the Montreal borough of Lachine by CAD Railway Services. CAD will increase its workforce for this project from the experienced labor pool that exists in Montreal today.
