Central Rivers has been purpose built to maintain the new 34 Voyager and 44 Super Voyager trains being manufactured for Virgin Trains. The Cdn$69 million (48 million euro) facility, built on a 29 acre greenfield site at Barton-under Needwood, has already created 120 new jobs and, when the full fleet of 78 trains is in service in 2003, will eventually employ 250 staff. The facility has additional capacity to enable Bombardier Transportation to offer maintenance services to other train operators in the future.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Pierre Lortie said: "I am delighted that Central Rivers is now officially open and fully operational. We are already half way through deliveries of Voyagers to Virgin and the first tilting Super Voyager is built and on test in France.
