Lincoln city centre came to a halt as hundreds of mourners gathered for the funeral of a 28-year-old bomb disposal expert killed in Afghanistan.

Captain Daniel Shepherd, from 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment, the Royal Logistics Corps, was killed in an explosion in Nad-e-Ali District in Helmand Province on July 20.

His funeral service was held at Lincoln Cathedral, where hundreds of friends, family, fellow soldiers and veterans gathered outside to pay their respects.

Capt Shepherd was commanding an Improvised Explosive Device Disposal (IEDD) team while serving with the Joint Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group.

Today his wife Kerry, parents David and Judith, and brother Paul arrived to a crowd of silent wellwishers.

Capt Shepherd's coffin, draped in the Union Flag, was lifted from the hearse by six servicemen and taken into the packed cathedral.

After his death the MoD said he joined a select group of the best Bomb Disposal operators in December 2008, and during his tour in Afghanistan had already dealt with more than 50 devices.

Lieutenant Colonel Roger Lewis, Joint Force Engineer, Task Force Helmand, said: "Captain Dan Shepherd was an extraordinary officer; composed, compassionate, utterly charming and imbued with a single-minded determination to put others before himself.

"He was incredibly courageous yet immensely modest about his own stunning achievements."
