Bomb as Murphy starts job.

A TERROR gang greeted Northern Ireland's new Secretary of State with a bomb raid aimed to kill and maim maim v. to inflict a serious bodily injury, including mutilation or any harm which limits the victim's ability to function physically. Continuity IRA's van bomb came as Ulster Secretary Paul Murphy began his first day on the job with a walkabout in Bangor, Co Down.

A phoned warning would have been too late if the bomb had been triggered , said police.

Chief Insp Bill Brown said: "The warning was totally inadequate to clear an area of this size. It presented a serious threat to life and property."

Last night it was disclosed that sophisticated new pistols are to be issued to more than 7,000 police in the province.

Chief Constable Hugh Orde has ordered ageing Ruger revolvers be replaced with Glock 17 semi-automatics at a cost of pounds 3million, with training in the personal protection weapons from April.
