"This is an immensely exciting event for Gateshead," said Gateshead councillor Linda Green.

"The new format looks set to bring even more exciting competition to athletics at the Gateshead International Stadium. Elite athletes from across the globe will be right here in competition for not only top prize money but also crucial points in what is going to be a hard fought and much coveted league.

"It also means Gateshead reinforces its place on the global stage in the top tier of world athletics venues."

In 14 meetings across the world, the Diamond League will showcase the cream of the world's athletics talent.

Along with 100m and 200m world record holder Bolt, former 100m and 200m world champion Tyson Gay Tyson Gay (born August 9, 1982) is an American sprinter who won gold medals at the 100 meters, 200 meters and 4 x 100 meters events at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics in Osaka, Japan.  and ex-100m world record holder Asafa Powell are also due to compete in the four-month programme, with the enticing possibility of a three-way sprint showdown on Tyneside.

With prize money totaling $6.63 million, the Diamond League will also feature the best British talent, such as world champions Jessica Ennis and Phillips Idowu.
