Bolstering food safety.

THE NATION'S FOOD SUPPLY SHOULD BECOME A LOT SAFER thanks to three private sector initiatives that are being implemented by the Grocery Manufacturers Association The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) is a trade association based in Washington, D.C..

Since 1908, GMA has been representing the world's largest branded food, beverage and consumer product companies.
.

'The food industry is ultimately responsible for the safety of its products," says Pamela G. Bailey, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Washington-based GMA GMA

. "We take responsibility very seriously and want our consumers and policymakers to know that we are vigilant when it comes to product safety and consumer protection. We are stepping up to the plate, taking responsibility and developing innovative reforms to improve the safety of our products."

The new initiatives include:

* Product Recall Modernization: GMA, in partnership with FMI and GS1, has developed and launched an electronic, web-based product recall portal that will facilitate the rapid and accurate flow of information between manufacturers and retailers during product recalls. Enhanced communication will ensure that recalled products are removed from the marketplace as quickly as possible, as well as reduce or eliminate consumer risk.

* Third Party Food Safety Audit Certification Reform: To ensure rigor and integrity in third party auditors, policymakers and industry leaders should encourage the engagement of auditors employed by certification bodies accredited to international standards by recognized organizations, such as the American National Standards Institute (ANSI (American National Standards Institute, New York, www.ansi.org) A membership organization founded in 1918 that coordinates the development of U.S. voluntary national standards in both the private and public sectors. It is the U.S. member body to ISO and IEC. ). GMA is working with others, including FMI, to progress the development of food safety auditing criteria based on Codex Alimentarius, an international body that establishes voluntary food safety standards.

* Modernization and Implementation of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) for Food: The FDA is in the process of updating and issuing its GMPs for food. The issuance of updated GMPs is essential and GMA will provide industry-wide training and education to ensure rapid and widespread adoption of the new and updated GMPs.
