start never improved for the Eugene Emeralds The Eugene Emeralds (nicknamed the Ems) are a minor league baseball team in Eugene, Oregon, United States. They are a Class A team in the Northwest League, and have been a farm team of the San Diego Padres since 2001.  on Wednesday, when visiting Boise picked up its first win of the season 5-1.

McBryde lost his footing because of a wet mound, prompting Eugene manager Greg Riddoch Greg Riddoch (born July 17 1945 in Greeley, Colorado) is a former manager in Major League Baseball. "It snowballs sometimes," said Boise coach Tom Beyers Thomas Jeferson Beyers (born April 9, 1958 in San Francisco, California) has been a Minor League Baseball player, coach and manager during his career.

Beyers was original drafted in the 15th round of the 1979 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers as an outfielder out of
, whose team began the season 0-8.

"When it gets to five, six, seven, now they start pressing. You don't want that at this level, at this point. These guys are just stepping into pro ball and (the win is) just like getting something off our back."

Eugene (6-3 overall), which had averaged more than five runs per game to start the season, was held to five hits in front of a crowd of 2,708. However, they had numerous opportunities to score.

The Emeralds had runners on second and third with two outs in first before Robbie Blauer struck out on a full count.

In the fourth inning, Brian Lauderdale toed the plate with the bases loaded and two outs - the previous three batters having walked. Lauderdale launched the first pitch foul down the left-field line and, two pitches later, hit a groundout ground·out

 to end the inning.

In his next at-bat, Lauderdale accounted for the Emeralds' lone run with a solo home run to left field on the first pitch of the seventh inning.

"That's just one run, and we're still behind by a lot," Lauderdale said. "I wish it could have come one at-bat earlier."

The Ems also failed to drive in a runner in scoring position In the sport of baseball, a baserunner is said to be in scoring position when he is on second or third base. The distinction between being on first base and second or third base is that a runner on first can usually only score if the batter hits an extra base hit, while a runner on  in the eighth and ninth innings.

"That's where you want to be, to get an opportunity to score," Riddoch said. "That is why the game is so wonderful. It is totally unpredictable."

Boise scored a run on a two-out broken bat single by Drew Rundle - a graduate of Bend High School Bend Senior High School is the oldest high school located in Bend, Oregon, United States. The school opened in 1904, but did not graduate its first class of seniors (three students) until 1909.  - in the second and added two more runs in the fourth on a two-run home run by Billy Mottram.

"Teams like that are kind of dangerous," Lauderdale said. "They've been down, they've been beaten by team after team, game after game. Their sticks were alive and ours were just a little flat today."

On a positive note, with two strikes and two outs in the ninth inning, Danny Payne's walk put him on base for his 85th consecutive game dating back to college when he had 77 in a row.

Notes: Opening day starter Pablo Menchaca has been sent down to Peoria.
