Boiler's a good start to reduce emissions; RENEW REUSE RECYCLE THINK GLOBAL ACT LOCAL Telegraph GO GREEN.Byline: By Mary Griffin ENVIRONMENT REPORTER MOST of us don't give much thought to our boilers. But the difference between a neglected gas guzzling boiler and a high efficiency A-rated appliance can be as much as pounds 270 a year - the cost of a bargain holiday or 100 pints of beer! Heating and hot water is the biggest energy cost in a home, 60 per cent of the building's carbon emissions. So for those of us wanting to cut carbon footprints and bills, the boiler might be the best place to start. Martin Coen, boss of Coventry Worcester Bosch specialists, 1A Plumb It, said: "Replacing a poorly-performing boiler with an A-rated appliance could save anything up to 40 per cent on bills. But if you can't afford a new boiler you can make your system more efficient." According to according to prep. 1. As stated or indicated by; on the authority of: according to historians. 2. The Trust has a list of recommended gas boilers carrying the Energy Saving Recommended logo, which means they have met strict criteria on energy efficiency, so will cost less to run and reduce emissions. The logo has been granted to 43 Worcester Bosch models - more than any other make. The familiar radiators of steam and hot water heating systems in buildings are misnamed, as they operate principally by convection, in which heat is transferred by air valves mean heat can be sent to the areas where its needed." If your boiler is 10 years old or more now might be the time to consider replacing it. If you have a younger system you could improve its performance by having it "de-sludged", fitting thermostatic radiator valves, or insulating your pipes. Martin said: "We can give a boiler a power flush to improve its efficiency. "We remove a radiator and fit a pump which circulates a cleaner, de-sludging the network. "During a power flush is also a good time to fit thermostatic radiator valves to improve the efficiency of old radiators." 1A Plumb It are accredited installers of Worcester Bosch so can offer a full parts and labour guarantee lasting five years.
