Bogus calls: Three quizzed.


THREE men have been arrested following a spate of burglaries involving elderly victims.

The arrests came after several residents fell victim to a scam (SCSI Configured AutoMatically) A subset of Plug and Play that allows SCSI IDs to be changed by software rather than by flipping switches or changing jumpers. Both the SCSI host adapter and peripheral must support SCAM. See SCSI.  involving callers claiming to be delivering parcels or gifts for neighbours.

After getting in the homes, the bogus delivery officials stole purses and cash.

Yesterday, the trio, aged 35, 39, and 49, were arrested on suspicion of conspiring to commit distraction burglaries and are currently helping police with their inquiries.

Det Supt Peter Farrell is urging residents to be on their guard against bogus callers.

 crimes against vulnerable old people who kindly allowed strangers into their homes to leave parcels for absent neighbours," he said.

"Our advice is never to let anyone into your home without checking their credentials first.

"People need to remain extra vigilant at all times and make sure they check identification thoroughly and not presume that callers are genuine."

He advises people to fit a door chain, ask for photo ID, ask the caller to come back and have someone with you when they do, keep a list of useful telephone numbers for utilities and if the caller can't quote the number don't let them in.
