Bog off; Campaigners say loo is 'too futuristic' to be placed at beauty spot.Byline: DAVID David, in the Bible David, d. c.970 B.C., king of ancient Israel (c.1010–970 B.C.), successor of Saul. The Book of First Samuel introduces him as the youngest of eight sons who is anointed king by Samuel to replace Saul, who had been deemed a failure. POWELL DESIGNS for a new toilet block have outraged residents who say they're 'too futuristic' for a Conwy Valley beauty spot. The toilets, boasting a sycamore-shaped roof made of zinc, would be part of a new tourist information centre tourist information centre tourist (Brit) n → Touristen-Informationszentrum nt in Betws y Coed. Conwy council wants to build the complex on the village green in Cae Llan. But upset locals handed a petition and letters of objection to Snowdonia National Park Snowdonia National Park Park, northern Wales. Established in 1951, it has an area of 838 sq mi (2,171 sq km). It is best known for its mountains, composed largely of volcanic rock and cut by valleys that show the influence of Ice Age glaciers. Authority, at its planning and access committee meeting in Maentwrog last week. Park officials have now decided to make a site visit before deciding whether to approve it. But objectors say the design, with oak and glass walls, is unsuitably 'futuristic' and shouldn't be built in a conservation area. Campaigner Gladys Harrison, who handed in a 75-signature petition and more than 20 letters of objection on Wednesday, said: "It would be a startling star·tle v. star·tled, star·tling, star·tles v.tr. 1. To cause to make a quick involuntary movement or start. 2. To alarm, frighten, or surprise suddenly. See Synonyms at frighten. building, totally out of keeping with the conservation area." Many objectors agree that new conveniences are needed to replace existing toilets, and tourist information centre in The Old Stable nearby, but they's prefer a site on existing car or coach parks in the village. Another objector Sandra Berry said existing public conveniences near Cae Llan are adequate as she hasn't seen a queue there 'in 40 years'. But Betws y Coed and District Tourism Association says the majority of its members support the new toilets as the existing toilets 'smell horrible despite cleaning'. A council survey found a remarkable 14,000 people visited it in one week in July. Some complained about the smell. The town's Tourism Association spokesman said: "This would not be acceptable anywhere but, where the local economy is so reliant on the tourism market, this is damaging to the reputation of Betws y Coed and to the Snowdonia National Park as a whole." Dolwyddelan-based company Seven Architects designed the complex. Director Ian Chapman denied the design was unsuitable. He said: "It is contemporary but it is a gentle building. The zinc roof would look like lead and be made of traditional roof cladding The plastic or glass sheath that is fused to and surrounds the core of an optical fiber. The cladding's mirror-like coating keeps the light waves reflected inside the core. The cladding is covered with a protective outer jacket. See fiber optics glossary. materials." He added: "It's such a pretty village and people are used to traditional buildings. "But there are also a lot of modern buildings in Betws Y Coed, such as the extension to the church." davidpowell@dailypost.co.uk CAPTION(S): Proposed new toilet for Betws y Coed |
