Professional Engineering Employees Association (SPEEA SPEEA Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace SPEEA Seattle Professional Engineering Employees Association ), says the union negotiating team has "strong reservations" about The Boeing Co.'s proposals on health care benefits and wage compensation. The union started negotiations with Boeing on Oct. 23 and had hoped to have a contract proposal ready for members next week. "The Boeing Co. went too far on their take-backs in the benefits arena. The company went too far," Bofferding said. "We're we're Contraction of we are. we're we are not certain we will be lifting an offer by Friday, or anytime soon." SPEEA seeks to maintain health care benefits at their current level and gain guarantees that all bargaining unit A bargaining unit in labor relations is a group of employees with a clear and identifiable community of interests who are (under U.S. law) represented by a single labor union in collective bargaining and other dealings with management. members will receive some salary increases during the next three years. As of Wednesday, work on benefits and wage compensation had only been dealt with in negotiating sub-committees, Bofferding said. SPEEA has not yet seen an official proposal at the main bargaining table. Preliminary indications are that the company's proposal will contain similar take-backs to those that caused the International Association of Machinists to strike Boeing on Oct. 6. Support for SPEEA is growing. The union gained 300 new members in October -- the largest monthly increase in recent years. Early indications are that even more people will join the union in November. "They are pouring in," Bofferding said. "People are quickly realizing that there are real issues at stake and they can't go at it alone." Union members point to renewed public support. "Boeing is a leader in the employee benefits arena," Bofferding said. "If they succeed in implementing take-backs, every employee in the region will feel it. If the top comes down, everything comes down." CONTACT: SPEEA Charles H. Bofferding III, 206/433-0991 or Bill Dugovich, 206/227-3968 (wk), 206/631-2993 (hm) 206/954-9298 (cellular) |
